PHP Versions at ASO

By default, most shared servers run PHP 4.x (latest release available, currently 4.4.8). This is installed as an Apache module, and scripts run with the web server's User ID (user: "nobody").

Shared servers also have PHP 5 (currently 5.2.6) installed using suPHP. This forces the PHP script to run as a CGI under the user ID for the website account holder (ie, your cPanel username).

Most ASO shared servers also run PHP 5 as a FastCGI∞. This was originally set up to run multiple PHP versions prior to cPanel 11. ASO keeps this installed for existing customers that have sites configured to run PHP5/FastCGI.
