If you have a VPS, shared reseller account, or you are a shared hosting customer who wants custom nameservers, here is how to do it. For the purposes of this document, we will use the domain example.com for all examples.
First, you'll need to know the IP addresses you're going to use. These were included in your Welcome Email as part of your account details.
Shared hosting customers (including resellers):
ns1.asmallorange.com - 64.22.96.90
ns2.asmallorange.com - 67.19.36.196
VPS:
You'll use the IP addresses assigned to your VPS server.
For this document, we will assume you've been assigned:
1.2.3.4
1.2.3.5.

Setting up the DNS records on your server

Shared hosting customers
You will need to submit a ticket asking for the zone file to be modified to use the following information:
example.com. IN NS ns1.example.com.
example.com. IN NS ns2.example.com.
ns1.example.com. IN A 64.22.96.90
ns2.example.com. IN A 67.19.36.196
VPS Servers:
Login to Web Host Manager.
Select DNS Functions -> Edit DNS Zone (this zone won't exist until you've created the account for your domain in Cpanel or manually added it through Add a DNS Zone).
The NS records may already be added, but you'll need to create the A records. Be sure your zone file includes this information:
example.com. IN NS ns1.example.com.
example.com. IN NS ns2.example.com.
ns1.example.com. IN A 1.2.3.4
ns2.example.com. IN A 1.2.3.5
For all new accounts in your VPS to use this information, you'll want to go to Basic cPanel/WHM Setup and enter the ns1.example.com and ns2.example.com under Primary and Secondary Nameservers.

Next Step

Now that the preliminary steps have been completed, you'll need to register the Nameserver IPs at your Registrar and set the new Nameservers for your domain.
